Francis was the son of a very wealthy cloth dealer from Peruggia. His father sent him to a good school, he should learn to calculate, write and read well, in order to eventually take over his father's business. In his youth, Francis lived a dissolute life and squandered his father's money at many festivals.
It was only after a war over Assisi that Francis withdrew and made several pilgrimages to Rome. On the way there, he exchanged his beautiful clothes for those of a beggar. After a vision on the cross, he heard the voice of Jesus telling him to rebuild the Church in Assisi. Later he founded the Order of the Franciscans.
