St. Anthony of Padua, often referred to as Anthony of Lisbon, was a Portuguese theologian, preacher and Franciscan. Anthony is considered a saint and is one of the 36 Doctors of the Roman Catholic Church.
Anthony was born in Portugal, where he also studied and was ordained a priest.
He joined the Franciscan order. Antony went to Morocco as a missionary, but because of his illness he soon had to return and landed in Sicily. There he met Francis of Assisi. Antony was known for his extraordinary talent for oratory and was commissioned to preach because of riots in Romagna. Even then, he was considered the most important preacher. He spent his last years in Padua and died there.
