Agnes of Rome is venerated as a saint, consecrated virgin and martyr. Anges came from a Roman noble family and had been promised as a wife to the prefect of Rome. When he wanted to marry Agnes, she said that she could never marry the prefect because she had vowed celibacy for Christ's sake. The young woman was brought before the court, but even the threats of the court could not dissuade her from her faith. Roman law forbade virgins to be executed, so Agnes was stripped and an attempt was made to rape her. However, her body was then miraculously covered by her hair and a white light appeared on the square. The prefect was haunted by a demon and died. Agnes, however, brought him back to life through her prayers and was thus accused of being a witch.
They wanted to burn her at the stake, but even the fire moved away from her.
Eventually, she was beheaded by a Roman soldier, just as lambs are beheaded. That is why Agnes is often depicted with a lamb.
The feast day of St. Agnes is January 21 in the Catholic Church. She is the patron saint of virgins and young girls, betrothed and chastity.
